Multi-phased restoration at this London, Ontario landmark was to preserve its cultural and historical significance. Commissioned by Bishop Walsh, the Cathedral was designed by architect Joseph Connolly in 1880. Construction began on May 27, 1881, and four years later the magnificent structure was completed at a cost of $136,000.
JPM Architecture Inc. has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Diocese of London and St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica since 1998. Over the past two decades, the firm has completed more than 25 projects at the Cathedral, including condition reports, investigations, renovations and restorations.
Significant restoration efforts have included the repair and replacement of the copper roofing system and decorative trims, restoration of the stained-glass windows with the addition of vented protective glazing, comprehensive masonry restoration and repointing of the building’s exterior, and the installation of lead-coated copper cladding on weathered surfaces. The original flagstone plaza was also replaced with a newly detailed poured concrete plaza. Interior renovations, completed in Phases 1 and 2, included the installation of an integrated metal lath and plaster system to prepare the Cathedral for new interior finishes.
